Financial Literacy

Financial Literacy Shouldn't Be Out of Reach.

Most people never receive formal financial education. Not in school, not at home, and not in the community spaces that are supposed to support them. Yet the decisions families make around money, planning, and stability shape everything, from whether there's enough at the end of the month to what kind of future gets passed down to the next generation.

FLAG was built to close that gap. Practical, accessible, and completely free, it's financial education designed for real life. Not theory. Not complicated systems. Just clear, honest tools that help families and young adults make stronger decisions, build better habits, and start thinking about the long game.

What FLAG Covers

  • Budgeting and tracking daily expenses
  • Saving strategies and building an emergency fund
  • Goal setting tied to financial outcomes
  • Financial decision making in real-life situations
  • Financial planning basics for families
  • Workforce readiness and income awareness
  • Long-term financial thinking and generational wealth concepts

How FLAG Works

FLAG sessions bring participants together for guided discussions, real-life examples, and practical exercises that help apply financial concepts directly to their own situations. Every session is designed to feel approachable and immediately useful, not like a classroom lecture.

Sessions run 90 minutes to 3 hours depending on the format and are held at the West Haven Public Library and partner locations. Standalone FLAG workshops may also be offered to the public. Sessions are facilitated by Family First Initiative leadership and guest facilitators and partners as applicable.

Some standalone workshops offered outside of core programs may be available for a fee. This will be noted clearly when announced.

FLAG principles are also embedded across all Family First Initiative programs so financial literacy becomes a shared language throughout the entire community.
