Away from screens. Outside. Side by side, working through something that takes patience, focus, and teamwork. Those moments don't just build memories. They build trust, communication, and the kind of connection that carries into every other part of family life.
But finding free, accessible, welcoming spaces for families to do that together isn't always easy. Wheelz & Reelz was created to solve that. It brings families and youth together through outdoor activities including biking and fishing, in a relaxed, fun environment where the goal is simple: show up, spend time together, and go home a little closer than you came.
What You Can Expect at Wheelz & Reelz
- Outdoor sessions at parks, waterfront areas, and community spaces throughout West Haven and Greater New Haven

How It Works
Wheelz & Reelz sessions bring families together for outdoor activities in community spaces across West Haven and Greater New Haven. Facilitators guide families through biking and fishing activities while encouraging conversations that reinforce leadership, responsibility, and family connection.
The outdoor setting creates a natural, relaxed environment where parents and children can engage with each other without the distractions of everyday life. No experience with biking or fishing is needed to participate. Some sessions may include shared equipment while others may ask families to bring their own. Details will be provided ahead of each event.
Thanks to donor support, Family First Initiative is also able to provide bikes, protective gear, and fishing equipment for families who need them. Sessions take place at parks, waterfront areas, school parking lots, and other outdoor community spaces depending on the activity. Schedules are announced seasonally through the FFi website.

Who It Is For
Wheelz & Reelz is open to families with children and youth of all ages in West Haven and Greater New Haven. No experience with biking or fishing is required, and no referral is needed to join. The program is completely free, and equipment support is available for families who need it.
